About Defuse Nuclear War

We live in a world where the constant risk of nuclear use has become a new, unacceptable norm.

Read about our policy goals here.

Very few decision makers in the U.S. government have demonstrated an independent commitment to reducing tensions among nuclear weapons states and setting the world back on the path toward eliminating the nuclear threat. Meanwhile, key treaties and agreements have abandoned and haphazard, destructive military action has all but replaced diplomacy.

That’s why we work with people across the country, from all walks of life, to give them the tools they need to demand that our elected leaders take a stand and work to reduce the risk of nuclear war.

What We Do

Education and advocacy on Iran and nuclear weapons

Since the beginning of the U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, Defuse Nuclear War has held teach-ins and other educational events aimed at combatting the misinformation used to justify these attacks. Defuse Nuclear War members participate in protests and advocacy events to pressure our congressional representatives to assert their authority to determine whether the U.S. goes to war. We also do media outreach to push back against false narratives and elevate grassroots and Iranian perspectives.

Speaking out against U.S. ICBMs

Coalition members regularly hold vigils and protests in response to test launches of U.S. ICBMs from Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County, California. These tests are an overt demonstration of the U.S. willingness to use its nuclear weapons, a dangerous and counterproductive step when wars involving nuclear-armed countries are fast becoming a new norm. Aimed at Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, the missile tests reinforce dynamics of colonial exploitation that have damaged the health and livelihood of Marshallese communities for many decades. Defuse Nuclear War activists aim to call attention to these recurring visible demonstrations of U.S. nuclear weapons, which are carefully timed and planned to avoid public scrutiny.

Calling attention to the impacts of the war on Gaza

January 8-14, 2024 was Defuse Nuclear War’s week of action for a ceasefire in Gaza. Groups rallied, held vigils, dropped banners, held public protests, and passed out flyers to educate their communities on the connections between the crisis in Gaza and nuclear weapons.

Standing up for diplomacy

On February 24, 2023, Defuse Nuclear War held events all over the United States demanding diplomacy in place of military escalation in Ukraine. Coalition efforts resulted in dozens of events nationwide during the Defuse Nuclear War Week of Action September 24-30, 2023. The coalition organized dozens of nationwide protests, vigils, and demonstrations calling for restoring the groundwork for diplomacy with Russia and Ukraine; disarming ICBMs; and reinstating ABM, INF and Open Skies treaties. Our weeks of action were covered in Common Dreams and local media across the country.

Highlighting the achievements of coalition members

Defuse Nuclear War regularly presents work by coalition members to a broad audience to increase its impact; recently, on May 14, 2026, we held an online screening and panel discussion for Vahid Razavi’s Forever Peace Now!, a documentary highlighting the role of the tech industry in the U.S. war machine.

Remembering movement leaders

Beginning April 24-30, 2023, the coalition marked the passing of Daniel Ellsberg with Daniel Ellsberg Week. Members organized city proclamations, articles, op-eds, and videos commemorating Ellsberg’s life of brave action in the service of the public good. Seeking “to honor peacemaking and whistleblowing,” the cities of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and San Francisco and Berkeley, California, issued proclamations designating April 24-30 as Daniel Ellsberg Week to honor the renowned Pentagon Papers whistleblower.
