Defuse Nuclear War is convening a coalition of groups working against war & militarism to strategize and coordinate against large-scale military action against Iran by the U.S. and/or Israel and to put an immediate stop to the rapidly deteriorating situation.
Through regular meetings, outreach to representatives, and coordinated grassroots actions, we believe combining our efforts is the best way to resist the threat of war with Iran.

A war with Iran would be a Disaster
Israeli airstrikes against Iran have placed the world on the precipice of an all-out regional war with dire global implications. Far from stemming Israel’s worst impulses, the United States has joined in on the warmaking, wantonly striking targets in Iran. It is abundantly clear that Donald Trump and his cabinet of warmongers neither understand the dynamics of the region, nor do they have an overarching strategic vision. Rather, they are credulously following Benjamin Netanyahu and Iran hawks inside the U.S. political establishment into a confrontation that has long been dreamed of by the pro-war lobby. It is not an exaggeration to say that a direct confrontation between the U.S. and Iran could easily lead to a third world war.
- Congress must immediately take action to prevent President Trump from continuing to ramp up the campaign against Iran. Donald Trump cannot unilaterally commit the U.S. to this confrontation. Only Congress can declare war. This war has had no Congressional debate or vote, which is required by the U.S. Constitution.
- Americans across the political spectrum oppose war with Iran. U.S. involvement in Iran would put members of the armed services directly in harm’s way for no good reason.
- An Israel-Iran war or U.S.-Iran war would be disastrous for the people of Iran, who are already suffering the effects of sanctions. There will be no “brief” or “minimal” war with Iran. Iran’s military is sophisticated and extensive, capable of imposing serious casualties on its enemies. Any direct confrontation would likely be protracted, with heavy losses on all sides. U.S. incursions into the Middle East at the beginning of the 21st century would pale in comparison to a war with Iran.
- Israel has nuclear weapons, but Iran does not. Yet, perhaps in part as a result of a U.S. unwillingness to acknowledge Israel’s nuclear weapons program, polling has shown that many Americans believe the exact opposite to be true.
- A “maximum pressure” approach to Iran policy from the U.S. could prompt the country to go nuclear in an effort to stave off attacks, which in turn could lead Saudi Arabia to make good on its public promises to develop a nuclear weapon should Iran develop one. A Middle East with three nuclear weapons states would make for an infinitely more dangerous world.
